Manufacturers apply for UPCs from GS1 (the Uniform Code Council). After approval, the manufacturer pays an annual fee to participate in the UPC system and receives a unique manufacturer identification number, which is used for all of that company’s barcodes. The item number is specific to each product and is assigned by the manufacturer (avoid duplicating numbers across SKUs). The check digit is calculated from the rest of the number to confirm the barcode hasn’t been corrupted in transmission. Other types of barcodes

The study concluded that QR codes “included in product packaging, on labels, and in commercial spaces (shelves, showcases, posters, etc.) are considered particularly effective in providing timely product and brand information given their capacity to reach consumers when and where they are ready to purchase with relevant, targeted, and interactive information.”

The practical use cases we see most: linking to product information pages, ingredient sourcing or sustainability stories, video tutorials, loyalty program signups, and traceability for fresh or regulated products.

The shift from 1D to 2D barcodes (and what Sunrise 2027 means for your labels)

For 50 years, the 1D UPC (those vertical black bars) has been the barcode at retail. That’s starting to change. The industry is moving toward 2D barcodes (the square, QR-style codes) for checkout, and there’s now a date attached to it.

GS1, the same organization that issues your UPC, is leading a global push called Sunrise 2027. The goal: by the end of 2027, retail checkout systems should be able to scan a 2D barcode and pull your product’s GTIN (Global Trade Item Number) the same way they read a UPC today.

Why 2D barcodes

A 1D UPC holds one thing: a 12-digit number. A 2D barcode holds a lot more. A single QR code can carry up to roughly 4,296 characters, more than 50 times what a linear barcode holds. That extra room lets one code do several jobs at once:

  • Identify the product at checkout (the GTIN, same job the UPC does today)
  • Carry batch numbers, lot codes, and expiration dates, which helps with recalls and lets a register stop the sale of an expired item
  • Link to a web page you control with ingredients, sourcing, sustainability info, how-to content, or a loyalty signup

The piece that makes one code do all of this is a GS1 standard called GS1 Digital Link. In plain terms, it’s a way of formatting a QR code so it works as both a scannable retail identifier and a web link. The checkout reads the GTIN; a shopper’s phone opens the page. Same code, two audiences.
If you already put a QR code on your labels, it probably points to a marketing URL and nothing more. A GS1 Digital Link QR code is different. It carries your GTIN inside that link, so the same code a shopper scans for product info can also be read at the register. If you’re refreshing artwork anyway, it’s worth asking your provider to format new QR codes the GS1 Digital Link way so you’re not redoing them in two years.

What this means for your labels right now

Here’s the part that matters most, and the part that’s easy to get wrong: 2027 is not a deadline to remove your UPC. It’s the target for retailers to be able to read 2D codes. For now, the two codes live side by side.

The industry calls this dual marking: your label carries both the traditional 1D barcode and a 2D code during the transition. GS1’s own guidance is that until about 90% of retail point-of-sale scanners can read 2D codes and capture the GTIN, any product using a 2D code at checkout still needs the linear barcode on the pack too. So for the foreseeable future, you keep your UPC. You can add a 2D code next to it.

  • Keep your UPC. It’s still what scans at almost every register today. Nothing about Sunrise 2027 changes that yet.
  • You don’t have to do anything by 2027 to keep selling. If you change nothing, your products still scan. This is an opportunity, not a compliance scramble.
  • If you’re adding a QR code, make it a GS1 Digital Link code. That way the code you print today is the code that works at 2D checkout later.
  • Plan for two codes on the label. A 2D code needs its own space and its own quiet zone, just like a UPC. If you’re tight on real estate (small cans, slim bottles, narrow shrink sleeves), it’s worth working out placement before you commit to a print run.

Whether the move to 2D is on your roadmap this year or a couple of years out, the design rules for the codes themselves haven’t changed. Quiet zones, color, size, placement, and a flat printing surface still decide whether a code scans cleanly. That’s what the next section covers.

How to make sure your barcode and UPC actually work

Barcodes are graded on a scale from A to F. Higher grades scan more reliably across more scanners. The factors that determine the grade are mostly within your control if you set up the barcode correctly from the start.

Respect the quiet zone

Every barcode needs a “quiet zone”. A clear margin around the barcode with no text, graphics, or other printed elements. Without a proper quiet zone, a scanner can pick up surrounding artwork and misread the barcode, which causes errors at checkout.

The quiet zone should be the larger of these two measurements:

  • 10 times the width of the narrowest bar in the barcode
  • One-eighth of an inch (0.125″)

Use the right colors for your barcode

While colorful labels can help your product stand out, the barcode itself needs a simple color scheme to scan reliably:

  • Bars: use a single color, ideally black or another dark color. Avoid warm colors like red or brown. They don’t read well on the red laser scanners most retailers still use.
  • Background: the barcode background is usually unprinted, so it takes on the color of the label or packaging. If the label color is dark or warm, print a light background (typically white) for the barcode area and quiet zone.

Pay attention to barcode size

Barcodes come in custom sizes the same way labels do. Yours needs to be big enough to scan reliably, but not so big that it crowds the rest of the label.

The standard UPC barcode is 1.469″ wide by 1.02″ tall at 100% magnification. You can scale up or down within these limits:

  • Minimum: 1.175″ wide by 0.816″ tall (about 80% of standard)
  • Maximum: 2.938″ wide by 2.04″ tall (about 200% of standard)

Design the barcode at the size you actually need from the start. Don’t generate a standard-size barcode and then resize it manually. That can cause scanning issues. If you need a different size, generate a fresh barcode at the new dimension.

Place the barcode where scanners can find it

For products that scan at retail checkout, place the barcode in the lower-right corner of the back panel of the package. Keep it away from edges and creases, and leave enough white space around it so the scanner has a clean read.

The printing surface for the barcode also needs to be relatively flat. Bumps, creases, or curved surfaces (like the seam of a shrink sleeve) can cause scan errors. If you’re printing on a curved container, make sure the barcode sits in a flat zone, not where the curve is steepest.

Once your label design has the barcode in place, you’ll need to send the artwork along with the barcode files to your printer. In addition to the label artwork files, deliver the barcode in one of these forms:

  • An image file of the barcode you received from the provider
  • An Excel document with a list of UPC numbers
  • A PDF or EPS of the barcodes

It pays to work with a label printer that has solid barcode-handling capabilities. A barcode that fails to scan can mean lost sales, frustration on both sides of the counter, and chargebacks from retailers if their systems can’t read your products. A good label printer will choose materials and printing techniques that avoid smudges, abrasions, and low-resolution issues that hurt scan quality.

Worth knowing: Thinking of using printable label sheets on a home inkjet or laser printer? Be careful. Home printers often can’t hit the resolution barcodes need, and the paper labels designed for home printers usually aren’t durable enough for most product environments (no water resistance, low tear strength, prone to smudging). Fine for short-run testing; risky for production.

How to get a barcode

If you’re starting from scratch, the place to start is the GS1 website.

In the U.S., you can either get a single barcode (a GS1 US GTIN) or register a block of multiple barcodes (a GS1 Company Prefix). GS1 has a helpful barcode estimator to figure out exactly how many barcodes. And what kind. You’ll need.

The process is straightforward:

  1. Choose either a GS1 US GTIN (single product) or a GS1 Company Prefix (multiple products)

One thing worth knowing: there are third-party resellers offering “discount” UPCs. Most major retailers (Amazon, Walmart, Target, Kroger) require GS1-issued barcodes specifically. Saving a few dollars on a non-GS1 UPC can disqualify your products from those retailers, so go directly through GS1.

While some people may want to break down cost on a price per unit basis, we find that it’s generally better in print to evaluate your label cost per thousand pieces. So between 1,000 and 2,000, you can get twice the amount of labels for $61.40 more. The ‘Price per Thousand’ (sometimes notated as ‘Price per M’) category is intended to give a more clear ‘apples to apples’ comparison on items that have a small unit price.

Simply put, the more material we use, the more expensive your label project will be. As such, larger labels can cost more than smaller labels from a raw materials standpoint.

Print layout is also another major factor that can influence label sizing costs. Label materials come in long rolls that are fed through a machine that prints your design onto the face stock of the roll. Depending on the size of your design, you may be able to fit multiple labels across the width of the roll.

By fitting more labels on a roll, you can improve printing efficiency and limit label material waste. This amount of material waste isn’t too noticeable in smaller orders, but a 20 percent difference in material costs is a noticeable change for larger quantities of labels.

Fortunately, there are measures you can take to help maximize space and minimize waste. While digital label printing allows breweries the flexibility to invest in lower quantities of beer labels, higher quantity runs can help you drive down your cost per thousand. Every project includes initial costs to set up the printer, calibrate colors, set up die cutting, and complete other tasks to start the manufacturing process.

Regardless of whether you need 200 or 200,000 labels, we have to go through those same processes. However, that setup time can be amortized much more efficiently over a long print run of labels, which means that higher quantities of labels actually drive down label costs.

While larger quantities can drive costs down, there are some potential cost advantages of buying lower numbers of beer labels. Digital label printing allows you to avoid the hidden costs of labels of obsolescence – regulation changes, brand updates, and other events that can make your beer labels outdated. Multiple versions

One notable cost factor is the ability to group multiple label versions together in a single project. While plate-based printing will require added fees for each label version, digital label printing can group these different labels together as long as there are 500 copies of each.

Maybe you don’t can 50,000 of one flagship… but maybe you do can 10,000 of your top five beers and have some seasonal releases to add in as well. Instead of placing five separate orders of 10,000 labels, digital technology allows you to place one order of 50,000 labels to take advantage of the lower ‘per thousand’ unit cost. Lamination / varnish

Every beer label needs some form of print protection. The average beer label is going to face several potential issues. Fluids like water and beer can wreak havoc with paper labels. Shipping and handling can rub off ink without a laminate or varnish layer.

Standard laminates and varnishes aren’t an additional cost, as much as they are something that’s baked into your starting project price. Every film label project is made with some form of laminate, while wine stock papers will require a basic varnish. There are also decorative laminates and varnishes available as well for an additional cost. Finishes such as soft-touch or textured laminates can serve a dual role of protecting your beer labels while adding to the overall look and feel of your packaging.

Tooling costs

Beer label costs may also include tooling fees, but these can vary depending on your label design and how they’re printed. Older printing methods, like offset or flexographic printing, use unique sets of plates to create your beer labels. As such, you’ll need to pay for a new set of plates for every piece of artwork. Digital printing doesn’t require plates, which cuts out those costs and any additional lead time required to manufacture plates.

Custom label shapes can also add tooling costs. Specialized pieces of metal called dies are used to cut specific shapes out of label materials. While digital label printing companies often have a wide range of existing dies, specialty shapes may require a newly manufactured part.

Digital finishing equipment can apply many different decorative elements to beer labels. Foil stamping presses special foils into your material to create a raised image that stands out from other labels. Embossing imprints a special pattern or image into the label material, creating a pattern that consumers can see and feel. Spot varnishes allow you to coat specific parts of your design to make those elements pop. Each of these finishes can help capture consumers’ attention for an added cost.

Application

Your application process can also impact the beer label pricing as well. Your exact application process determines a few different factors:

  • Roll size
  • Unwind
  • Liner

Applicators can require a specific roll size or “Max OD” (Maximum Outer-Diameter). Your application process can determine how big the roll is, which can require more rewinding. Smaller rolls will also require your printing company to break your labels down into more manageable quantities for your machinery. These efforts won’t make for large changes in price for most customers, but they’re another potential reason why you might see an uptick in beer label pricing.

The required unwind can also affect potential cost efficiencies. The unwind determines which edge of the label first comes off the roll. This unwind can change how your printer needs to position your labels during printing. Depending on the dimensions of your label, that new positioning can yield a more or less efficient print layout.

Certain applicating equipment may also require a specific type of label backing. The backing, also called a liner, is the bottom layer of a pressure sensitive label. Applicators have sensors that read the label gaps during application, but certain sensors may only be able to read paper or film liners. As such, you may need to invest in a film liner which could slightly increase your project price if your applicator requires it.

Variable content

Variable data printing is another way that digital label printing allows you to change certain elements in a design without having to create entire new art files. Essentially, variable data printing utilizes a spreadsheet or some other file format to modify a variety of design elements, such as a headline, image, name, or color. Variable data printing can also incorporate variable images and patterns, allowing you to alternate or serialize label designs.

Variable data is a very useful tool for batch numbering, product tracking, or creating individualized items. It does require a good deal of setup and administration, so adding variable data printing to a label can increase costs.

Common Label Mistakes to Avoid: Art File Issues

Before a label is made, it starts off as art file. Label printing companies need these files to turn your design into a physical product, so it’s important to have everything in place to set your label project up for success.

An art file contains much more than just your design. Each file needs to include important details and meet certain guidelines so your finished labels look just like your design. As a result, one overlooked file standard can lead to potential problems with your label. Here’s a rundown of the most common issues that can affect your art files.

It’s in the Wrong File Format

Before you get too far, make sure that you’re using the right file format for your printer. Print companies have preferred file formats so that they can take your file and turn it into labels. At Blue Label, we require Adobe Illustrator files or High-resolution PDFs from Photoshop, so make sure to ask your label printer what files they need (if they haven’t told you already). Companies can often accept PDFs made through other software, but it’s best to ask questions or send over art files beforehand to make sure they are compatible with the commercial printing presses used to produce your packaging.

The Images are Blurry

Blurry images are the bane of a good design’s existence. When possible, use vector images in your art file so that they can be resized without worry. Vector-based artwork uses mathematical calculations to create lines and shapes that allow these graphic to look the same even if you zoom in on the file. You can make vector images in Illustrator
If this isn’t an option, you should be fine with pixel-based images if they’re a high enough resolution. Whether you use vector or pixel-based images, they should be a minimum of 300 DPI, although 600 DPI or more is preferable if possible.

The File is Too Big

Art files tend to get rather big if you’re not careful. Large file sizes can make it difficult to transfer the file to the printing press. That means it’s best to try and manage file size before yours becomes too big.

Images are the main reason for a hefty art file. Pixel-based images, such as .jpg, .gif, and .png files, are larger than vector-based images in terms of file size, so too much pixel-based artwork will bog down your file. You should also embed or link pixel-based images in your file. Embedded images are kept in the art file, which can contribute more to the overall file size. Linked images are saved outside the file and can save space if you also share the original image files with your printer.

The Colors are Wrong

It’s imperative that your art file uses the right color format. Digital printing requires CMYK, which is comprised of four colors – Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black (Key) – with additional hues that allow best-in-class printing presses to attain up to 98 percent of the Pantone spectrum. The RGB color model is designed for use on electronic displays like computer monitors and phone screens, but not for print. This means that you’ll want to use the CMYK model to make sure that your colors come through the way they should on your labels.

If you have a specific color in mind, it’s important to call it out using the Pantone Matching System. This will allow the printer to look up the exact color code and match the exact shade your brand requires. The Dieline Doesn’t Incorporate Bleed or a Safe Zone

Your art file not only needs to include your design, it also needs a dieline. As much as printing companies try to make exact cuts for every single label, there is a chance of some slight variation. The dieline should consist of three separate lines to prepare for this potential variation:

  • A main dieline that maps out the intended cut of the final design
  • A bleed area to ensure that there are no accidental white spaces
  • A safe zone to protect design elements

The purpose of the main dieline is simple: to show exactly where a die is supposed to cut a label. The bleed space is an extension of the background of the design to eliminate any off-putting white spaces if the cut isn’t exact. This bleed area should be at least 1/8” around all sides of your design.

The safe zone is also designed to provide wiggle room, this time creating a space in your design so that any essential elements – type, logos, etc. – aren’t too close to the dieline. The safe zone should allow for 1/16” of space between the dieline and any elements. You can see an example of a complete dieline with all three components below.

The Text isn’t Outlined

A good design is more than just images – even a minimalist label design is bound to include a few words. To ensure that these words print correctly, it’s important that you have the font outlined in your art file before you send it over to a printing company.

Outlining fonts is critical because it takes each letter and turns it into an image. This practice eliminates the need for font software and files. It also offers a few key benefits, such as making it easier to create custom type tailoring, adding color treatments to parts of characters, and making type heavier for production purposes.
