Tamper Seals and Tamper-Evident Labels

The two terms get used interchangeably, but there’s a real distinction. Tamper-evident means the seal clearly shows if a package has been opened, through a torn band, a broken strip, or a “VOID” mark left behind. Tamper-proof suggests a package can’t be opened at all, which no seal can truly guarantee. Most of what people call tamper-proof seals are really tamper-evident seals, and that’s the honest and accurate way to describe them. The goal is clear evidence, so anyone can tell at a glance whether the package is still sealed.

It comes down to your container and how it opens. Shrink bands work well on bottles and jars with a cap or neck. Breakaway and void labels suit cartons and flat lids. Cross strips fit boxes and two-piece containers. Holographic seals add an anti-counterfeit layer for spirits, supplements, and luxury goods. Yes. Bottle seals are one of the most common formats we print, usually as shrink bands that wrap the cap and neck. They tear when the bottle is opened, so the evidence is obvious. We size the band to your exact bottle and closure, and we can add foil, holographic film, or full-color printing so the seal matches the rest of your label. This is a popular choice for spirits, supplements, and beverages.

It depends on your product. Over-the-counter drugs carry federal tamper-evident packaging requirements, and many states require tamper-evident (and often child-resistant) packaging for cannabis. Food, supplements, and cosmetics may not always be required to use them, though many brands do because buyers expect an intact seal. Requirements change and vary by category and state, so it’s smart to confirm current rules with the relevant agency, such as the FDA, or a labeling consultant before you print.

For products that ship cold or sit in humidity, like refrigerated food or supplements, we spec a material and adhesive that won’t lift or fog in transit. Yes. We print full color and can add hot foil stamping, embossing, holographic film, and metallic accents. These finishes do double duty, making the seal harder to counterfeit and giving your package a more premium look. Holographic and foil options are worth considering if the seal is a visible part of your design, such as a neck band on a spirits bottle.
